It's Time For Action On Safety

In July an overnight attack at a Hungry Jacks restaurant, the use of CCTV cameras, and the subsequent criminal charges, demonstrate that CCTV cameras work when it comes to fighting crime .

As members of the community we are all entitled to feel safe as we go about our daily lives - be it shopping, taking the kids to the local park or Crime Victimtravelling on public transport. The recent stabbing at Mitcham Railway Station, highlights that there is an urgent need to act and deter further incidents.

In the past Phil worked very closely with the Nunawading Police to secure federal funds, under the Community Crime Prevention Program, for CCTV cameras and signage to be installed at Mitcham Railway Station and Britannia Mall in Mitcham. At the same time, Phil worked closely with the Ringwood Police to secure the same funding for Ringwood Railway Station.

Since CCTV cameras were installed at Croydon Railway Station, there has been a noticeable reduction in crime.

There has been no indication that community safety is a priority for Labor. There is no suggestion that the Member for Deakin, Mike Symon, has done anything to pursue funding for CCTV cameras at Mitcham and Ringwood Railway Station. One can only conclude that community safety is not a priority.

CCTV cameras work. They are an effective deterrent which can even lead to a conviction. What price is Mr Symon and the Labor Government putting on the safety of residents?

The violence and bashings that have taken place in Melbourne in recent months are a salient reminder of the need for all levels of government to work towards the protection of its citizens.

The solution is not complicated. Prioritise community safety and install CCTVcameras.
